Typography
Above Below
Above/Below is a typography created with reference to the Necropolis located in Glasgow at Glasgow Graphic Design Festival through a workshop hosted by Colophon Foundry.
It's an experimental typography inspired by Necropolis, a cemetery located in Glasgow. The type is playing with the layers of existance. Visiting the cemetery the alive ones can walk through the Necropolis and wonder of what lies 'below' them whereas the ones that are not with us any more are facing what is 'above' them.
Instead of looking at the letter in a two-dimensional nature, there is an emphasis given to their volume. As the tombs are extruding through the ground and so are the letters. Each letter has a three-dimensional nature that comes into life through the shape of its architectural drawing.
The shape of each letter brings in mind the form of a satellite. Taken the concept and abstract form of the Above & Below typography, I have chosen NASA as an organisation where the type could be used.
